The mex tools that come with ML (xgl, kbd, prttoolbox) install keyboard hooks on initialization that capture user inputs, which is why MATLAB does not respond to typing when ML is aborted abnormally. The developers of those tools implemented a way to release the hooks manually. Press ALT+F12 and you will be able to type in MATLAB again.

Here is a trick I use:

In the matlab window you type the kbdrelease command.

If you find yourself in a situation where you lost keyboard control, but still have your mouse, you can move your cursor to the matlab window and double click on this command in the command history window.
